Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

When it comes to likes and dislikes, I’m a phase guy. For a month I’ll be really  obsessed with mysteries or Shakespeare or who-knows-what. It’s the same with music, except… I can always listen to some country with a smile. We’re talking good country now—not the stuff that relegates itself to talk of nothing but girls and jeans and pickup trucks.

There’s a whole heap of guys out there singing good songs with lyrics that are money in the bank. I’m particular to Wade Bowen; have been for a while. One song above all in his catalogue hits the highest marks. It’s called Sun Shines on a Dreamer.

It doesn’t do anything musically that will blow you away. The song is mixed well, everything is as it should be, but that’s not what makes it right.

The lyric is what I call half-story, half-message. The verses tell a little story to illustrate the message, which is contained in the chorus. It’s a pretty typical formula when writing a song. I’ve used it countless times.

So what’s the message? Simple. If you don’t go outside, you’ll never get warm. The sun only shines on people that don’t hide from it. It’s a lesson that needs repeating. So many shy away from the light—understandably. Too much of it can burn—and then there’s always the possibility of a storm when you need the sun the most.

Suppose there’s not much one can do about the mishaps and pitfalls, but one can go and stand outside—hope for the sun to shine. We’re not talking providence; just good old-fashioned sense.

Stand outside. Listen to some good country. Maybe the sun will come out today. Screw waiting for tomorrow. See you after.
