Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About Being Not You

About Being Not You

Post 1500:

I’ve had the chance to know a lot of amazing people in my life. Luckier than most, in that department. A few of these heroes, I put into a certain category. Each time I talk to them, I feel different. Lighter. Optimistic. A lot more like them and a lot less like me.

Maybe it’s that I forget about myself when I’m talking to them, all my problems and fears and bullshit that is mostly out of my control anyway. It’s more than just good conversation. But there’s no plan to it. Happens that way with some folks. Wish I had the formula. Certain people do certain things and there’s not a person on Earth that can really understand why.

I only know the effects, and I know that they are therapeutic, more than therapy. Conversation that transports you from yourself and your needs and wants is some of the best currency around. Maybe the best. I’ve been to actual therapy. It’s good. Probably super helpful to some people. I should probably be going right now for one reason or another. But my last therapist left without warning to move to the place in the mountains I said I was going to move.

That’s right. My last therapist stole my retirement plans. I found that to be a very un-therapuetic move on his part. Bastard. Lulled me in with that nice bushy therapy beard. I had to buy a therapy pillow after that episode.

Alright, I bounce. But think about it. If there’s someone that helps you forget, maybe talk a bit more, forget a bit more. You don’t want to overuse any resource. Just do you. But not. If that makes sense. Cheers and see you after.
