Tyler Has Words is the blog of Tyler Patrick Wood, a writer/musician from Texas. You'll get free book excerpts twice a week. On the other days, you'll get words. If you would like an original take on everything by an expert on nothing, this might be a cool place to hang out.

About The Right Luck

About The Right Luck

Post 1831:

I’ve seen and read a lot of subpar stuff lately. It happens. Bit of a waste of time, but it’s not like I’m one of those people that fills my calendar with constant things that matter. I don’t even have a calendar. If I can’t keep it in my head, it’s probably not that important.

So, back to the crap I’ve been consuming. I am fascinated sometimes that some of this stuff gets produced. It has to be passed through all kinds of checkpoints before it gets to you and me. The only explanation is, they ran out of time.

Or the creators are terrible people. I doubt that. Most likely, they ran out of time.

Independent artists free from overlords have all the time in the world. Space to move, air to breathe. That’s cool and neat and therefore “art by artists” is always good and pure and righteous, made with the best intentions by cherubs.

But wait. Lots of indy art blows. So maybe they had too much time. This is assuming ability, talent and work ethic, by the way. Not sure I had to qualify it, but there you go.

What you need is some luck. You need the right amount of time, where overthinking isn’t possible, nor are you constrained by an oppressive schedule. Boundaries matter, dudes. It’s sort of a luck thing.

I used to think that getting discovered and having a great career in the arts depended on luck. It does. But I don’t worry about that kind of luck anymore. Now, I just want the right conditions to make something good. Otherwise the fame luck doesn’t matter. Nothing could be worse than being famous for creating garbage. That would be unlucky, actually.

Cheers and see you after.
