About Dark (Can It Be Spoiled?)

About Dark (Can It Be Spoiled?)

Post 1850:

I don’t think it can be. This German Netflix show is something I’ve been hearing about for a few years. I tried the first episode a couple times and never got through, thinking it was going to be another brooding ballbuster with too many questions and not enough answers.

Well color me surprised. I had no idea this was a rip-roaring light-hearted knee-slapping romp through the ethereal forests of lovely Germany. Who knew that in Dark, I would find some of the most hilarious one-liners and zingers ever? Guess I should have. Everyone knows that German is the language of hijinks and hilarity.

Okay, disregard that last paragraph. Dark is about as light as Cesium—that reference will make sense if you watch the show, a show that is so complex and weblike, I’m not entirely sure it all adds up.

We’ve got time travel. We’ve got Freudian family drama dialed up to levels that make Oedipus seem a tame bedtime story. There’s a bewildering criminal investigation. Lots of spelunking. Probably more spelunking than any other show in history. Serious romance. Betrayal, devotion, sacrifice. All the stuff of good drama. Especially the spelunking.

I’m not emotionally ready, but I’m going to go back and watch Dark again at some point. The plot is so complex I have to take notes to make sure they’re not getting away with nonsense.

When I say nonsense, I mean consistency within the story. A story that centers around time travel and multiple universes… I know, just trust me on this. It’s a bit early, but this has moved into my top ten of all time list. The family drama alone is unique enough to keep you invested. Some of the best character work I’ve seen, but then again I just watched Alien: Earth and may be suffering from severe cognitive decline due to the unmitigated ineptitude displayed therein.

If nothing else, the people that made this show gave all kinds of crap. And it’s not perfect, even if the plan was perfectly executed. Nothing is. You have to appreciate a real college try, though. Check it out and tell me what I’m getting wrong.

Cheers and see you after.
