About Tuner

Tuner is a decent movie I saw the other day. It’s about a piano tuner and I’m a piano player, so maybe I’m biased. I don’t think I’m biased. I don’t even know how that would make me biased.

There’s some good stuff going on here. The idea of a guy with amazing ears falling into safecracking is a nice hook and it works pretty well, though the way he gets involved in crime is a bit contrived. I would’ve liked to see more moral conflict, but whatever. It’s okay.

The love story is an almost. It does have a nice little ending scene that makes you curious what’s going to happen, but it doesn’t really make up for the momentum stall in the early third act. He gets in over his head with the crime stuff, lets her down, seen it before… could’ve been better.

There’s a thing with a watch. So convenient. I laughed. Come on. It’ll make sense if you see the thing. There’s a bit of a Good Will Hunting thing going on as well, because this humble piano tuner is a musical genius. And I get that things come full circle—I just think it’s done in a clunky way.

There are some really neat elements, and overall it’s a good effort. Really fun score and editing. The main kid is solid, as is Dustin Hoffman, being funny Dustin Hoffman.

Really, it’s a superhero movie. I could explain why, but just trust me. Watch this instead of Spiderman. I don’t know if Spiderman is good, but there’s 900 of those. And this is only the 47th piano tuner movie of 2026. Rarity should be appreciated.
